Those fortunate enough to be at the Camberwell Sports Ground on Saturday witnessed one of the more remarkable innings seen in Victorian Premier Cricket history.
Coming in at 1/1 in the First XI’s clash with Footscray Edgewater, Simon Hill had to weather an impressive first session bowling effort from the Bulldogs’ bowlers, who exploited the favourable conditions to have the ones teetering at 8/59.
Managing to avoid the collapse down the other end, Simon set about rebuilding the innings with number 10 William Walker in a vital 91-run ninth wicket stand, of which Will contributed 8 off 65 balls. By the time the tenth wicket fell, Simon had finished with a truly astonishing 137 off 124 balls, which included 16 boundaries and three sixes. Making the innings even more amazing was the fact that Simon scored 79.65% of the team’s total of 172 (a Victorian Premier Cricket record), and more importantly has put the First XI in a position to win the game with Footscray 8/112 at the end of play.
While Simon has had an incredible career for CMCC, many agree Saturday’s knock was the best of his 13 centuries in the state’s premier cricket competition.
